Malaria spreads to the North Pole

Researchers at SF State have discovered
malaria in birds in Alaska, including the

Malaria is no longer recognized as endemic tropical and subtropical regions. The disease is spread by mosquitoes is also found in birds in Alaska, the U.S. state that is located near the north pole. "Global climate change is encouraging malaria farther north," the alert to a study published in the journal PLoS ONE, issue of September 20, 2012.

The spread of malaria near the northern end of the earth potentially devastating arctic bird species that have never come across this disease. "These findings could help scientists understand the effects of climate change on the spread of human malaria caused by parasites of the same," said Ravinder Sehgal, a professor from San Francisco State University who was involved in the study.

The researchers examined blood samples collected from poultry four locations based on different latitudes in Alaska, the Anchorage (Alaska's largest city) as points south, Denali and Fairbanks as the mid-point, and a point north of Coldfoot. Sampling point distance from north to south stretches as far as 600 miles. Birds infected with malaria in Anchorage and Fairbanks.

The study them equipped with satellite images and other data to predict environmental changes due to global warming. Locations where the malaria parasite is able to survive in the future is also mapped. They found that in 2080 the disease will spread to the north Coldfoot and continue north. "Currently there is no avian malaria in areas above 64 degrees north latitude. However, in the future, with global warming, it likely would have changed," said Sehgal.

The researchers are still not sure how malaria spreads in Alaska. They are currently still collecting additional data to determine the species of mosquitoes that transmit the Plasmodium parasite that causes malaria.

Sehgal said the spread of malaria to the northern part of the earth is quite alarming. Therefore, many living species in the region that have not been exposed to malaria and is likely vulnerable to the deadly disease. *** [XINHUA | SCIENCEDAILY | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 4002]

Why Killer Whales Through Menopause?

Menopause is a rare phenomenon in the animal world. But that does not mean there are no animals that had. Like humans, killer whales (Orcihus orca) females also lost the ability to reproduce at the end of their natural life.
This shows southern resident killer whales in the waters around the San Juan Islands, USA and British Columbia. Both male and female killer whales will remain with their mothers throughout their lives. Adult male killer whales are easily distinguishable from females by their considerably larger dorsal fins. (Picture from: http://www.livescience.com/)
Stopping the fertile marine mammals may be intended for an elderly parent totally to care for their children until adulthood rather than pregnant again. "Our analysis suggests that male killer whales depend on the parent. They had to fight hard enough to survive without the help of their mother," said Dan Franks, researchers from the University of York, England on September 11, 2012.

An important role of parents in caring for adult children up to explain why the killer whales have developed the post-reproductive longest in the animal kingdom. Individual female killer whales typically stop reproducing at the age of 40 years. Though they can live to be about 90 years old.

In a study published in the journal Science, Franks said the presence of the parent who experienced menopause males actually increase an individual's ability to survive. "But we did not find the same effect on female individuals," he said.

They also found that the mother's death impact the male killer whale. "Children under 30 years old females it is not affected by the death of their mother," kata'Franks. He speculated that the mother of killer whales are more focused on the survival of male children to ensure the maximum growth, so that in time it will deploy calf genes passed on.

"Killer whale is an incredible animal. Their social group really unusual. Mains and their male children are lifelong friends," said Emma Foster, a researcher from the University of Exeter. Foster research shows that killer whales have developed the longest menopause than in non-human species, so as to offer the certainty of survival for the older offspring. *** [LIVESCIENCE | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3999]

Dolphin Population Exploded After the Storm

Hurricane bad news for life because often leads to disaster. However, the bottle nose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the storm becomes the beginning of a new life.

Hurricane Katrina hit the United States in 2005 was listed as one of the worst storms in history. But, at sea, the storm opened the way for the explosion of dolphin populations.

Since 2004, a group of biologists from the University of Southern Mississippi routinely record the number of young dolphins in the Atlantic Ocean. The survey population continued until next three years. Startling facts emerged, the number of baby dolphins increased significantly two years after Hurricane Katrina. For the head of research, Lance J. Miller, population increase associated with the disaster.

Parent baby dolphin death is usually faster than the pregnant mother whose son was growing up. "Most of the babies died after Katrina," said Miller, "So most actively reproducing females suddenly the next year."

But an increasing number of pregnancies significantly in increasing the number of children of dolphins two years later. Alleged switch to port after a disaster condition. harvest of shrimp, crab, and fish.

Decrease in the number of vessels be good for the life of dolphins. When the ship less, these marine mammals have a lot of time looking for food rather than avoiding the ship.

Reduced arrests made Atlantic waters like dolphins heaven. Fishery data show that 75 percent of the Mississippi fishermen catch are bottle nose dolphins. "The impact, the pregnant females get more foods that gave birth to a healthy baby," says Miller, "Babies who are born also have a chance of surviving from hunting so the number of young dolphins increased two years after Hurricane Katrina." *** [SCIAM | ANTON WILLIAM | KORAN TEMPO 3986]

Why Insects Can Float on Water?

There are some known species of little-insects can walk on water, or better known by the term "water strider" (henceforth, be called a "insect"). Although the water level seem to look flat to the human eye, for small creatures such as insects, water will seem like a "wall" which is pretty big. This wall is created by what is called the surface tension of water. To walk on water, the insects need only climb this wall. However, in order to climb the wall, legs needed a very special structure which is only possessed by these insects.

Hairy legs structure that help little
insects can float on water. (Picture from:
http://www.anneahira.com/)
The ability of insects to walk on water is a skill that is developed by insects to find place to lay eggs or to avoid predators. Previously, scientists initially thought that the ability of insects to float on the water just seems to be caused by the presence of materials such as wax released by insect legs and combined with the surface tension of water. But now scientists have finally discovered how little insects walking on the actual surface of the water.

Mosquitoes laying eggs in the water.
(Picture from:  http://aktifisika.wordpress.com/)
Microscopic images of insects leg revealed that insects have a very small fine hair, called "microsetae". Hair were arranged towards one direction and consists of several layers. Microsetae shaped like needle has a diameter of less than 3 micrometers, compared with the diameter of a human hair that can reach 80-100 micrometers. Microsetae addition, there is also an insect leg indentations smaller again.

Structure of legs like this will give the effect of a hydrophobic (water-repellent) are very strong and can withstand the load when the insects floating on the water. That scientists refer to as the insect leg superhidrofobik. Because of dense layers microsetae and indentations there, the air will be trapped. Air trapped in the space contained between microsetae and nano-sized grooves will form a kind of air cushion, which prevents insects feet wet by water. In addition, the structure of the foot like this, insects can also withstand loads equal to 15 times its body weight without sinking.

Water striders using surface tension
when mating. (Picture from:  http://en.wikipedia.org/)
Insects also appear constantly move back and forth when it floats. This is done to avoid his body submerged in the water. Because these insects hovering over the water by using their legs like oars. And it is very important that these insects are not wet feet, because their feet to avoid penetrating the surface tension of water as long as they are "rowing". If their feet accidentally fall through the surface of the water, they have to produce ten times the strength of their weight to return to the surface.

This insect is also known as rapid movement, it can reach speeds of 1.5 m/s, the speed is very high considering the relatively small body size. To move, the insects will hit the surface of the water with a couple feet without penetrating the middle surface of the water, then forming depressions in the surface of the water. This basin deep enough to push the insect forward and make these insects off with a fairly high speed. *** [LIVESCIENCE | PIKIRAN RAKYAT 30082012]

Peter Jager, Head of Arachnology at the Senckenberg Research Institute in Frankfurt, Germany, reported that he found the spider in a cave in Laos, about 100 kilometers of Xe Bang Fai a giant cave river. Spider is named Sinopoda scurion was the first species of spiders were eyeless than 1,100 species of huntsman spider.

"We already know there is a spider genus from the other caves, but they always have a complete eye and pigmentation," said Jager. "Sinopoda scurion is the first huntsman spider who has no eyes."

In a report published in the journal Zootaxa, Jager explained that this regression may have occurred because the animals live in total darkness. Some relatives of spiders other cave dwellers who lived in Asia also shows a similar transition to adapt to the cave environment. "Starting from the eye that serves eight to six, four, and two lenses, to the eyeless spider," said Jager.

Spiders also have a number of neighbors who live in caves, the scorpion Troglokhammouanus steineri and Vietbocap lao from Xe Bang Fai and Nam Lot cave, a blind cavefish (Bangana musaei) from the Xe Bang Fai cave system, and a freshwater crab found in the same location as the eyeless huntsman. *** [LIVESCIENCE | KORAN TEMPO 3969]

Are Crows As Smart As 7 Years Olds Children?

The limit of bird intelligence can now be measured. A recent study showed that the crow is almost equivalent to the ability of children aged 7 years. This conclusion is based on the trial Aesop fable.
A study has shown that young children and crows can both solve a similar task, but only the children were able to retrieve the reward when it was made more complicated. (Picture from: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/)
This experiment requires a thirsty crow to drop a pebble into a pitcher of water. The amount of gravel being dropped will cause the water in the jug up to the limit which can reach half of the crow to drink.

In this study, the scientists compared the ability of children of all ages with a crow to conduct experiments Aesop fable. "The experiment requires that children and crows to move the water in the tube to get a gift or reward of food," said Lucy Cheke, researchers from Cambridge University, England, Thursday (July 26, 2012).

The experimental results show that the ability of children aged 5-7 years are no better than a crow. Just like the crow, the children's fable Aesop completed after five tries. Unlike the 8-year-olds who can complete the trial in a single occasion.

But there is one experiment that can be solved consistently the children but can not be carried out by crows. A U-shaped tube filled with water buried in the ground until leaving two holes that look like two separate tubes. One size too small hole so it is difficult to drop the object through it. This tube also contains a gift.

When confronted with this tube, the children are not disturbed at all. Children can easily improve the watershed in the tube by dropping objects into a bigger hole. But the crow can not solve this puzzle, and always failed to win the prize.
Crows operate on a trial and error basis while children weren't put off by setbacks. (Picture from: http://www.standard.co.uk/)

Why the Technology of Wheels does not Appear in Animals?

Why aren't there wheeled turtles,
for instance?  (Picture from:
http://www.livescience.com/)
Animals have almost all the technologies that exist in the human world. For example, the magnetic compass of migrating geese, dolphin sonar technology, beaver dams, and ants agricultural technology. All those technology that evolved over millions of years even through evolution before humans find it.

However, from a variety of advanced technology, there is one technology that does not exist in the animal world. Technology is the "wheel". Why is no one type of animal that has a "wheel"?

Each type of animals moving in their own way. There is a running, jumping, swimming, diving, gliding, and even rolling like a ball. But no one has a body part that can rotate: the natural wheel.

The researchers looked at the fact this is quite strange, considering that the technology is not as complicated as Wheel animal body parts, such as eyes. "While the wheel is nothing more than a cylinder which rotates freely on a fixed axis," the researchers said, as quoted by LiveScience, Wednesday (8 August 2012).

Evolutionary biologists say the complexity of the eye appears as a result of living needs to be light. It took 400 thousand years to develop a complex eye.

While the wheel, on the other hand, is actually a complex system that can not be simplified. Wheels must be made to work perfectly. If the circle is not perfect, does not fit with the axle, the wheels will not roll.

Wheels can only be made by someone with great skill. This explains why people do not find the wheel until the Bronze Age, when humans are able to cast metal.

Evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins said the animal had never started to develop a natural wheel-like organ because the locomotion organ was considered not beneficial for animals. *** [LIVESCIENCE | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3966]

Why Should the Cuckoo Disguise?

In the UK, most of the cuckoo gray and brown. Sometimes this bird looks like a hawk. But others have a reddish brown plumage similar to a kestrel bird.

Scientists from Cambridge University, England, studied the evolution plumage color of cuckoo. They studied the reaction of reed warbler hopefully cuckoo bird who tried to disguise and infiltrate into the nest and lay eggs. This strategy is intended to maintain its population.

Reed warbler will try to fend off the coming of the cuckoo has a color similar to its neighbors. Cuckoo often know this and develop the fur with a second color in order to infiltrate into the reed warbler nests.

"Cuckoo plumage evolved alternative to sneak into other birds nests," said Professor Nick Davies told Dailymail, last Friday (August 3, 2012). Cuckoo disguised behavior explains why many species of birds that use mimicry and develop various forms of camouflage.

Other researchers Rose Thorogood, said the cuckoo behavior led to unrest in the world of birds, especially those that are laying eggs. Other birds become anxious and suspicious. Therefore, they must continue to observe the presence of cuckoo by spying on his neighbors. "They not only learn from experience, but of what is going on around them," said Thorogood.

Despite the crafty and unsettling, the behavior is actually disguised cuckoo is one way to survive. This bird mimicry to develop methods to maintain its population dropped drastically last quarter century.

There are various reasons cuckoo population decline. Of the decline in the number of caterpillars due to forest destruction in the UK until the destruction of habitat on African soil, so the birds can not get through the winter. *** [DAILYMAIL | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3963]

Secret of Elephant Trumpet

Elephant voice calls is very powerful, able jarring as far as 10 kilometers (6 miles). No one knows why an elephant voice sounded like the roar, so Austria researchers for the first time to learn how the largest land mammal is producing sound.
African elephants in Amboseli National Park in Kenya. (Picture from: http://www.livescience.com/)
From the study it was revealed that elephants produce sound in the same way as humans when speaking. Elephant pushes air through the vocal cords and make it vibrate to produce sound. Elephants can even produce a lower voice than men because their vocal cords eight times longer than human.

"The frequency of sound produced by elephant is very low," said Christian Herbst, researchers from the University of Vienna, Austria, as quoted by LiveScience, Friday (August 3, 2012). Elephants voice calls generally occurred at a frequency of less than 20 Hertz so undetectable to the human ear.

There are two ways of producing sound vibrate the vocal cords.
  • The first way is called the active muscle contraction. With this method, the throat muscles are actively contracting the vocal cords vibrate. This method is found in a purring cat.
  • The second way is called myoelastic-aerodynamic mode. This method uses the air from the lungs to vibrate the vocal cords. Humans use this way when speaking and singing.
Chance of uncovering the secret is open when the Herbst and his team examined an elephant that died naturally in the Berlin Zoo in Germany. Laryngeal tube mounted on the elephant and their special warm and humid air blowing through it, like when an elephant breathe.

These findings, reported in the journal Science August 3, 2012, showed that the vibration caused by the same as generated by aerodynamic means myoelastic-mode.

"Elephants are using this way to produce low frequency sounds," says Herbst. "We now have evidence of vote largest to smallest land mammals." *** [LIVESCIENCE | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3962]

The Secret Strength of Shark Teeth

By well-known shark bites. Scientists continue to discover the reasons behind shark bites are extremely horrible.

Scientists at the University of Duisburg-Essen found the secret of the sea predator that is fluoride. They found the outside of the shark's teeth consists of fluoride, the active component of most of the toothpaste.

Although human teeth are protected by different minerals, both human and shark teeth are equally hard.
A close look at shark teeth found them full of flouride as well as a bit more flexible than previously imagined. (Picture from: http://news.discovery.com/)
Researchers already know that the shark's teeth never decay, and sharks are able to replace their teeth several times throughout their lives.

But the discovery that fluoride-containing tooth shark was a big surprise. "To make the teeth more resistant to acids, often containing fluoride toothpaste," said Matthias Epple, associate professor of inorganic chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen, told Discovery News.
Two teeth of the great white shark, right, with a fossil tooth of Carcharodon megalodon and a US 25 cent coin as a scale object. (Picture from: http://www.sci-news.com/)
"On the surface of human teeth, after brushing your teeth, a small amount-less than 1 percent of the hydroxide was replaced by fluoride," he said. "Rather, the (surface) shark tooth fluoride containing 100 percent."

In principle, sharks do not suffer from dental caries. "When they live in water and they replace their teeth regularly, protective gear should not be a problem for sharks."

Researchers at the University of Duisburg-Essen biomineralisasi been researching for several years. "Our main goal is to determine the effect of inorganic minerals in biological systems, such as teeth, bones and shells," said Epple. "The teeth of sharks are known to have an email, which consists of mineral fluoroapatite very hard."

By using the technique of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, scientists analyzed the sequence, size, and the nature of fluoroapatite crystals and measured the levels of violence short fin mako shark teeth (Isurus oxyrinchus), and tiger sharks (Galeocerdo cuvieri).

This discovery helps explain why the sharks are powerful predators, which can easily tear the prey's body. *** [DAILYMAIL | ERWIN Z | KORAN TEMPO 3959]

Medusoid, Artificial Jellyfish Made From Rat Cells

The scientists succeeded in making artificial jellies made from rat heart cells and silicone polymers. Like natural biological pump, the artificial jellyfish which dubbed Medusoid to throb like the human heart and could swim resemble the original jellyfish.

"It's a good model for studying the physiology of the human heart," says Kevin Kit Parker, a biological engineering researcher at Harvard University.

The idea of making Medusoid is to see how the muscular pump, in addition to the heart muscle or other organs, as well as learn the basic similarities or the principles of design in between.

Parker said the main ingredient for making Medusoid is rat heart muscle cells and a thin silicon films. Collaborated with researchers from the California Institute of Technology, they manipulate the cells and silicon into a structure that resembles a real jellyfish.

Then they were placed Medusoid in a tank containing electrically conductive liquid. Electric shock and then passed to stimulate the artificial jellyfish is so moving. "As a result, the jellyfish swim. But no need to eat and reproduction as well as real jellyfish," said Parker, Monday (07/25/2012).

Medusoid has many benefits as a model. Parker said that each scientist can take advantage of the jellyfish findings to solve different problems.

A marine biologist, for example, can learn more about the architecture and mechanisms of jellyfish swimming. Comparative biologists can observe the pumping mechanism Medusoid compared with the workings of the human heart.

For tissue engineers, Parker added, making Medusoid be a lesson in design and quality control. "I am interested in using Medusoid for development heart pain drug and as a model initial for designing artificial heart," Parker says.
The success of making Medusoid, published in the journal Nature Biotechnology, triggering Parker and his colleagues went on trial in other animals that have the anatomy and function of organs is more complicated and complex. *** [LIVESCIENCE | TELEGRAPH | MAHARDIKA SATRIA HADI | KORAN TEMPO 3950]

Dolphins May be Used Math While Hunting

The dolphin could be far
more skilled at math than was
ever thought possible before.
(Picture from: http://www.abc.net.au/)
Dolphins are known as smart animals. But who would have thought if marine mammals are able to perform mathematical calculations style. A team of researchers from the University of Southampton, UK, showed that dolphins use math while hunting.

There are specific techniques used when hunting this animal, the "bubble nets". They blew bubbles around the fish that will prey to force close. With the ability of echolocation, dolphins use sonar to determine who will devour their prey.

But the question arises, how to dolphin distinguish fish from the bubble? The study, led by Tim Leighton, a professor of ultrasound and underwater acoustics, shows that the dolphins "count" feedback from sonar signals they give off. "This capability requires a mastery of advanced non-linear mathematics," he said.

The dolphins use sonar in full and the exclusion of the other senses when hunting. When activating sonar, said Leighton, these animals emit sound waves with varying amplitude levels.

"Variations in the echo waves produce changes that can identify the target, in this small fish, in bubble nets. Manmade Sonar can not do this," he said Tuesday.

Leighton also found that the shape of the advanced sonar-called biased sonar pulse summation (BiaPSS) - allows the dolphin sonar sometimes separating emitted by prey. This capability is owned dolphins naturally.

Welcome to the Species Named Celebrity Club

Ticks are not dreadlocked. Her color was not red, yellow, or green, the color of the flag Rastafari Movement, a spiritual movement that espoused by Bob Marley. However, this parasitic crustaceans named Jamaican musicians, namely Gnathia marleyi.

The only similarity between these small ticks and dreadlocked musician who died in 1981 it was, they were from the Caribbean. Isopods are known to attack the blood suckers of certain fish that live in coral reefs in the shallow eastern Caribbean Sea.

Gnathia marleyi is a crustacean parasite
named after Bob Marley on July 10.
(Picture from: http://www.talk-ofthetown.com/)
"I gave the name of this species, which is a true natural wonder, using Marley's name out of respect and admiration on Marley's music," said Paul Sikkel, marine ecology faculty at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, United States, July 10, 2012. "Plus, this parasite species of the Caribbean that are as unique as Marley."

Marley joined the club is now a famous person whose name is used as the name of the species. Among the members of the club, there is President Barack Obama, whose name was inspired obamae Caloplaca, species of lichens that grow on the island of Santa Rosa, California.

Comedian Stephen Colbert even got two insects are named as the name suggests, while Mick Jagger's name pinned on an extinct trilobite, Aegrotocatellus jaggeri. Even the beautiful singer Beyonce is also a "member" of the club, because the species of horse flies with golden buttocks named Scaptia (Plinthina) beyonceae.

Lice, named Marley has a special uniqueness. Isopoda gnathiid only eat when still a teenager. These young fleas would hide. coral or algae in a stack, so that they can launch a surprise attack against the targeted fish.

Gnathiid adults do not eat anymore. "We believe that the adult parasites live for two to three weeks with supplies last count he ate when he was young and eventually die, hopefully after they breed," said Sikkel.

At this time, the team is exploring whether Sikkel gnathiid population has something to do with the health of Caribbean coral reefs are reportedly continued to decline. G. Marleyi, like other gnathiid, similar to a blood-sucking mosquitoes or ticks and are responsible for various diseases, including diseases that infect reef fishes.

"We suspect this coral degradation expand suitable habitat for external parasites launched an attack on its host fish," said Sikkel. "When the number of fish that have the potential for decreased host, the host is left to be eaten up more parasites."

Sikkel gnathiid first discovered this newly identified about 10 years ago in the U.S. Virgin Islands. But then he thought of the flea has been described. All life stages G. Marleyi, from juvenile to adult, was reported in the journal Zootaxia Sikkel in early July 2012. *** [LIVESCIENCE | KORAN TEMPO 3938]
