Trace the Fish in the Sea Water

Danish researchers claim to have found a way to trace the occupants of marine animals using DNA tests on samples of sea water. The findings appear in a study published in the August 29, 2012 in the journal PLoS ONE.

"We can track all animals under the sea around the world, monitor, protect the ocean and its resources better," said Philip Francis Thomsen, post-doctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.

Previously, Thomsen found samples of fresh water from rivers and lakes that contain genetic markers of several different animals. It was also found in sea water. In one study, Thomsen and his colleagues found the DNA of 15 species of fish in just half a liter of seawater. "We found the DNA of fish large and small, common and rare species. Fish cod, herring, sardines, eel, and many others who left traces of DNA in sea water," Thomsen said, as quoted by LiveScience, (on Monday/September 3, 2012).

In another study, they showed that the genetic material of dolphins (Phocoena phocoena) appeared in the western Baltic Sea water samples. "This means that a large marine mammals can also be tracked with this method," he said.

The problem is to search for the dolphins takes hard work. Thomsen DNA methods are not reliable as acoustic detection methods commonly used.

But the method can record the genetic material DNA of endangered species contained in water samples. This can not be done by an acoustic detection method that relies on sound recordings. Sperm From Skin Cells

Fuel from Soil Bacteria

Efforts in the search for alternative energy to replace fossil fuels take a step forward after a biology researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) found bacteria producing alcohol for fuel.

Genetic engineering allows researchers to teach the bacteria that convert exhaust gases into isobutanol.

Microbe is a soil bacterium called Ralstonia eutropha. These organisms naturally stop diverting energy needed to multiply into complex carbon compounds. However, this process should be accompanied by the provision of pressure on the bacteria.

MIT biologist, Christopher Brigham, came up with a new trick. He taught these bacteria to produce fuel without the need for special treatment. Changes in the nature of these bacteria through genetic engineering.

"As a result, bacteria can produce isobutanol types of alcohol," said Brigham as reported by MIT page, mid-August 2012. "This compound is a substitute for gasoline."

This soil bacteria consume nitrate or phosphate. But, when these nutrients are not available, the bacteria will turn into carbon hoarders. The most widely available source of carbon is carbon dioxide that humans exhale when breathing or removed vehicle engine. "Genetic engineering makes the bacteria to store carbon in the form of fuel, not plastic polymers," he said.

Additional modifications could allow the bacteria to use carbon from sources such as agricultural field waste or city waste. The research received about $1.8 million from Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA-E), the U.S. Department of Energy's research arm for high-risk, high-reward projects, from July 2010 until July 2013.

In the study, experts from Monash University, and Lancaster University in England is analyzed mitochondria from 13 different groups of male and female fruit flies. The results show that mutations in mitochondrial DNA have much effect on growth rate and age of the individual fruit flies.

"Interestingly, this mutation does not have the same effect on the pattern of aging in females," said Damian Dowling, one of the researchers from Monash University. "Mutations in mitochondrial DNA lead to more rapid aging in the male individual in the entire animal world."

Dowling said that if the only adverse effect of individual males but not females, this mutation would escape from the view of natural selection without realizing it. Researchers Turn on the Bacteria in the Computer

Mysterious Circle of African

Empty circles that dot the prairie Namibia in southern Africa is very similar to polka dot pattern. Mysterious empty circle known as the "fairy circles" will be formed and disappeared a few years later with no known cause.

A recent observation of a number of American researchers of this curious pattern but could not solve the mystery. At the very least, this study reveals that the largest circle can survive in the longer term. Little fairy circles, for example, can last about 24 years, while the larger circle can be aged up to 75 years.

Research results are reported in the journal PLoS ONE, the end of last June 2012. However, the study reveals how little circle was formed and survive in the sandy grassland until then disappeared a few decades later.

"Questions arise about why the circle is very difficult to answer," said study researcher Walter Tschinkel, a biologist at Florida State University in Tallahassee, United States. "There are many hypotheses proposed, but none that presents convincing evidence."
